Studio and Front Lot

Interconnected and never more than a "golf cart" ride away, the crew, employees and artists from our studio offices and soundstages, prop-shops, commissary and post production facilities, work together on Universal Studios’ front lot to create some of the finest and most exciting entertainment available today. In the future, we will revitalize our television and filmmaking facilities, explore new studios at the Universal City Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) Station and ensure that Universal can continue to tell great stories.

Key elements in the future could include:
  • Relocating and reinventing outdoor sets in the front lot, adding new post-production facilities, two sound stages, new production and support facilities, producer bungalows, new screening theater, new rehearsal hall, film vault, expanded prop/costume shop and mill.
  • Adding two office buildings and parking structures; relocating and enhancing Employee Child Care Center.
  • In total, the studio will create approximately 390,000 new square feet of production facilities and 335,000 square feet of offices including the Child Care Center.
Universal City MTA Red Line Station

The Universal City MTA Station has played an important role in our success, offering an alternative means for our employees and guests to access our property. In the future, we hope to strengthen this connection by extending our studio production across Lankershim Boulevard to the MTA Station property and implementing an integrated transit plan. NBC Universal and Thomas Properties Group are initiating discussions with MTA regarding the development of a studio and office campus at the Universal City MTA Station. NBC Universal would become a tenant in the new studio complex to be developed by Thomas Properties Group. Working together, we could create a powerful model for the potential of entertainment industry transit oriented development.

Key elements in the future could include:

A new studio campus with production facilities, an office building, commissary and support facilities as well as a comprehensive parking plan.

  • Universal’s portion of the MTA Station project would include a 200,000 square foot studio center and 450,000 square feet of office as well as parking to support the campus.
  • Thomas Properties Group’s proposal for a second phase of the MTA Station project will not involve Universal but will include a 400,000 square foot office building with retail and associated parking. The plan includes protection and promotion of the historic Campo de Cahuenga and additional parking for MTA.
